Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary defines knowledge as ”the truth or facts of life that a person acquires either through experience or thought. The greatest truth that a person can possess with the mind or learn through experience is truth about God. This cannot be gained by unaided human reason. It is acquired only as God shows himself to people—in nature and conscience; in history or providence; and especially in the Bible.” (737) Webster’s Dictionary defines acknowledgement as “recognition of the existence, truth, authority, or validity of something.” Therefore, in our acknowledgement of God we are recognizing the existence, truth, authority and validity of God’s ability to take the reigns in our lives.
Hear what Beth Moore has to say on acknowledging God: “Having praised Him and been purified by Him, you are ready to submit to God’s authority. Acknowledge His right to rule and reign in your life everyday. Then willingly and DELIBERATELY submit yourself to His lordship—ONE DAY AT A TIME. Any day not surrendered to the authority of the Holy Spirit will automatically be lived in the flesh (see Gal. 5). Acknowledging God’s specific authority over your personal life is not the same things as praise. We can praise God all day long with our lips yet never deliberately surrender to His lordship with our hearts. Often in this part of my prayer time, I acknowledge how trustworthy He’s been with His authority in my life. I recall how He has never misled me and that He calls upon me to submit to Him for MY SAKE…not for His. However you may word it, I urge you to make a specific point of acknowledging Him as Lord; voice your choice to bend your knee to Him. You might also ask Him for an immediate awareness when you are departing His authority. Acknowledge God’s goodness to you in the past and thank Him for His faithfulness during times you’ve allowed Him to be the uncontested Lord of your life. This is a very important step. God has shown me time and time again that He is trustworthy by answering prayer in His time in the perfect way and teaching me to rely more on Him in the process.
Over and over again God has shown His ability to take care of us--money, rest, friends, love--He makes sure we have just what we need. I know He will care for us, I know He will lead us, I know He loves us. That's why I choose to follow Him.
